Monday Mission Update - 2021.08.02

Thanks to our friends at Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), this past Friday campers at the Orokawa Y in Towson enjoyed an opportunity to learn about electric and gas safety, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles while also talking about the importance of diversity and inclusion and all the ways it strengthens community life.

And let me tell you, excitement wasn’t the only thing in the air… drones were buzzing about, too!

This fun, special event was a great opportunity for campers to engage in new activities that teach them about energy safety and the evolving role of technology in their lives. And, who knows? Perhaps some of the more than 100 campers will feel empowered by this event to pursue a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and help us address some of the major challenges our society faces regarding energy use.

BGE Camp Visit

BGE Safety and Innovation Day is a part of BGE’s RISE (Racially Inclusive Safe and Equitable) initiative, which is a key pillar of the organization’s community and internal efforts. The event served a dual purpose: to teach kids about the importance of diversity in life, a central focus of both the Y in Central Maryland and BGE, and to educate them (by way of exciting activities) about energy safety and innovation.

Thank you to our generous partners at BGE, including Y board member and BGE executive David Vahos, and a special note of gratitude to the many Y and BGE associates who teamed up to make this special event happen, including Dana Ashley, Frank Holden, Matt Lewis, Nick Alexopoulos, Justin Felt, Chris Hutchinson, Andy McCauley, Rebecca Postowski, Chanel Rhoads-Reed, Joe Soper, Elvia Thomson, and J. Nick Thomson.

All the best,
John
