Monday Mission Update

A tribute to moms

Whether a mom to little ones or the (supposedly) grown adults, human or the four legged kind, born or prospective, these are the top 10 things I believe all moms have in common:

  1. Eyes in back of your head
  2. A trademark on the word "multi-task"
  3. The patience of a saint
  4. The wisdom of Job
  5. The instincts of a cat
  6. Grace
  7. Compassion
  8. An ability to tackle anything and be good at it
  9. A slightly disguised but biting sense of humor
  10. Knowing when to deliver a push or a warm and understanding embrace.

Perhaps the sentiment that best reflects my view on the essence of a mom was one about the famous actress and dancer, Ginger Rogers, who, although married five times, never had any children.  However, the famous quote about her could be applied to virtually every mom you’ll meet: “Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels.”

For all these reasons and so many more, I salute and deeply appreciate the moms, stepmoms and grandmothers who work at or volunteer for the Y. Your many good characteristics (only a few of which are listed above) carry over and apply fully to your countless and invaluable contributions as Y associates and volunteers.

I hope everyone had a happy Mother’s Day! Thank you, supermoms, for all you do for the Y, for your families and for our community.

All the best,

John
